Uses
- Preventing migraine attacks in people who get frequent or severe migraines – it does not treat an attack that has started.
- Vertigo and dizziness from inner-ear (vestibular) disorders.
- Sometimes used for motion sickness or tinnitus, on a doctor's advice.
How to take it
Take one tablet once a day, usually at night because it causes drowsiness, with or without food, swallowed with water. It can take several weeks to reduce the number of migraine attacks, so keep taking it as prescribed and keep a headache diary for your doctor. Flunarizine is normally used for a few months and then reviewed – it is not meant to be taken for years without a break, because long-term use, especially in older people, can cause depression and movement problems like tremor or stiffness. Avoid driving or operating machines until you know how sleepy it makes you.

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

Kidney problems

Interactions
- Sleeping pills, alprazolam, antihistamines like cetirizine and other sedatives – much more drowsiness.

- Antidepressants – flunarizine itself can lower mood; tell your doctor if you take these.
- Phenytoin, carbamazepine and other epilepsy medicines can lower flunarizine levels.
- Propranolol, topiramate or other migraine preventives – do not combine without your doctor.
Frequently asked questions
What is Sibelium 10 used for?
Sibelium 10 contains flunarizine 10 mg. It is taken daily to prevent migraine attacks and to treat vertigo and dizziness from inner-ear problems. It does not stop a migraine that has already begun.
Should I take Sibelium at night?
Yes, night-time is usual because flunarizine causes drowsiness. Taking it before bed also helps you sleep through the sleepy phase.
How long does Flunarin take to prevent migraines?
It can take several weeks before you notice fewer attacks. Keep a headache diary and review with your doctor after a couple of months before deciding whether it is working.
Does Sibelium cause weight gain?
Yes, weight gain and increased appetite are common. Watching your diet and staying active helps; tell your doctor if the gain is troubling.
Can I take Sibelium with alcohol?
Avoid it. Alcohol and flunarizine together cause marked drowsiness and poor coordination.
Can I take Sibelium for a long time?
It is usually prescribed for a few months at a time and then reviewed. Long-term use, especially in older people, can cause depression and Parkinson-like tremor or stiffness, so breaks are built in.
Can I take Sibelium with a painkiller during a migraine attack?
Yes. Flunarizine is for prevention; for an attack you can still use the painkiller or triptan your doctor prescribed. Do not take painkillers on more than a couple of days a week, as that itself causes headaches.
Is Sibelium safe in pregnancy?
It is not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding unless your doctor judges it essential. Discuss alternatives if you are planning a pregnancy.
Is Flunarin a prescription medicine?
Yes. Flunarizine is a Schedule H medicine in India and chemists must see a prescription. It is also on the NPPA price-control list.
