Uses

  • Type 2 diabetes – lowers blood sugar by making the kidneys pass extra sugar out in the urine.
  • Reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke and death from heart disease in people with type 2 diabetes.
  • Heart failure – lowers the chance of hospital admission, even in people without diabetes.
  • Chronic kidney disease – slows the worsening of kidney function.

How to take it

Take one 10 mg tablet once a day in the morning, with or without food, at about the same time each day. Swallow it whole with water. Drink enough fluids through the day because the medicine makes you pass more urine. Your doctor may raise the dose later. Keep taking it even when you feel well; do not stop on your own. If you are vomiting, not eating, or have a fever, ask your doctor whether to pause it for a few days.

Side effects

Common

  • Passing urine more often, including at night.
  • Thirst and dry mouth.
  • Genital thrush (itching, discharge) in women and men.
  • Burning when passing urine (urinary infection).
  • Low blood sugar when taken with insulin or gliclazide-type tablets.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Diabetic ketoacidosis – nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, deep or fast breathing, fruity-smelling breath – stop the tablet and go to a hospital, even if sugar readings are not very high.
  • Severe dehydration – dizziness or fainting on standing, very dark urine.
  • Severe urinary infection – high fever with pain in the back or side, blood in the urine.
  • Severe pain, redness or swelling of the genital or anal area with fever (Fournier's gangrene) – emergency.

Safety information

Alcohol

Alcohol can push blood sugar up or down and adds to dehydration. Keep it to a minimum and never drink on an empty stomach.

Pregnancy

Not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a baby; insulin is usually preferred.

Kidney problems

Used to protect the kidneys, but tell your doctor about your kidney test results. It is not started if kidney function is very poor, and your doctor will check creatinine from time to time.

Liver problems

Tell your doctor if you have liver disease. No routine dose change is needed in mild to moderate liver problems.

Children

Not used in children or in type 1 diabetes.

Missed dose

Take it as soon as you remember the same day. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two tablets together.

Interactions

  • Insulin, glimepiride, gliclazide – the chance of low sugar rises; your doctor may lower their dose.
  • Water tablets like furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide – more dehydration and dizziness.
  • Blood pressure medicines (telmisartan, ramipril, amlodipine) – blood pressure may drop more than expected when you stand up.
  • Steroids and other medicines that raise sugar – tell your doctor so your diabetes plan can be adjusted.
  • Tell your doctor about every other medicine, including ayurvedic or herbal products.

Frequently asked questions

When should I take Jardiance 10?

Take it once a day in the morning, with or without breakfast. Taking it early means most of the extra urination happens during the day rather than at night.

Can I take Jardiance 10 with metformin?

Yes. Empagliflozin is very commonly prescribed alongside metformin, and combination tablets exist. Your doctor decides the combination based on your HbA1c, kidney function and heart risk.

Does Jardiance cause weight loss?

Many people lose a little weight because sugar (and its calories) is passed out in the urine. It is not a weight-loss medicine and should not be taken for that purpose.

Why do I keep getting itching or thrush on Jardiance?

Sugar in the urine lets yeast grow around the genitals. Wash and dry the area well after passing urine and drink enough water. If thrush keeps coming back, tell your doctor; it can usually be treated without stopping the tablet.

Can I take Gibtulio 10 if I have kidney disease?

Empagliflozin is actually used to slow kidney disease, but it is started only after checking your kidney function. Your doctor will tell you if your level is too low for it.

Is Jardiance safe in pregnancy?

No. It is not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Insulin is the usual choice for diabetes in pregnancy, so tell your doctor as soon as you plan or find out you are pregnant.

Can I take Jardiance 10 with alcohol?

Small amounts occasionally are unlikely to cause harm, but alcohol dehydrates you and can cause low or high sugar. Avoid heavy drinking, and never drink on an empty stomach while on diabetes medicines.

What should I do if I am vomiting or have fever while on Empaglyn 10?

Being unable to eat or drink raises the risk of ketoacidosis and dehydration with this class of medicine. Call your doctor; they may ask you to pause the tablet until you are eating and drinking normally.

Jardiance 10 vs Jardiance 25 – what is the difference?

Both contain empagliflozin; 25 mg is the higher strength used if 10 mg does not control sugar enough. For heart failure and kidney protection, 10 mg is the usual dose. Do not change strength without your doctor.

Is Jardiance available at Jan Aushadhi?

Yes, generic empagliflozin 10 mg is listed under the Jan Aushadhi scheme. It contains the same salt and needs the same doctor's prescription.
