Uses

  • High cholesterol and triglycerides, together with diet changes.
  • Preventing heart attack and stroke in people with diabetes, high blood pressure or other risk factors.
  • After a heart attack, angioplasty or bypass, to reduce the risk of another event.
  • Familial (inherited) high cholesterol.

How to take it

Take one 10 mg tablet once a day, at the same time each day, with or without food. It can be taken at any time of day; many people take it at night. Keep taking it long term even if your cholesterol report improves – that improvement is because of the medicine. Follow a low-fat diet and your doctor's blood test schedule.

Common

  • Muscle aches or weakness.
  • Joint pain.
  • Diarrhoea, nausea, indigestion.

  • Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, severe tiredness (liver problems).
  • Severe allergic reaction.
  • A small increase in blood sugar or new diabetes in people already at risk – your doctor weighs this against the heart benefit.

Safety information

Alcohol

Heavy drinking plus a statin increases the risk of liver problems. Keep alcohol low.

Pregnancy

Do not take in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Stop and tell your doctor if you become pregnant.

Kidney problems

No dose change usually needed, but severe kidney disease raises the risk of muscle side effects. Tell your doctor.

Liver problems

Do not use if you have active liver disease or unexplained raised liver enzymes. Your doctor may check liver tests.

Children

Used in children 10 years and above only for inherited high cholesterol under a specialist.

Missed dose

Take it when you remember unless the next dose is within 12 hours; then skip it. Do not double the dose.

Interactions

  • Clarithromycin, erythromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, some HIV medicines – raise atorvastatin levels and muscle risk.
  • Grapefruit juice in large amounts – raises levels.
  • Fibrates (fenofibrate, gemfibrozil) and niacin – higher risk of muscle damage.
  • Ciclosporin – avoid or use the lowest dose.
  • Warfarin – INR may change slightly.
  • Rifampicin – lowers atorvastatin levels.

Frequently asked questions

Atorva 10 morning or night?

Atorvastatin works for 24 hours, so it can be taken at any time as long as it is the same time each day. Night-time dosing is a common habit but not essential for atorvastatin.

Can I take Atorva 10 with alcohol?

Occasional moderate drinking is usually acceptable, but heavy or regular drinking with a statin raises the risk of liver damage. Keep it low and tell your doctor how much you drink.

Can I stop Atorva 10 once my cholesterol is normal?

No. Your cholesterol is normal because of the medicine. Stopping it lets cholesterol rise again and removes the heart protection. Any change should be your doctor's decision.

Does Atorva cause muscle pain?

Mild muscle aches are a known side effect. Severe pain, weakness or dark urine is rare but serious – stop and see a doctor immediately.

Is Atorva 10 safe in pregnancy?

No. Statins are not taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Tell your doctor if you are planning a pregnancy.

Atorva 10 vs Rosuvas 10 – which is better?

Rosuvastatin 10 mg lowers LDL cholesterol a bit more than atorvastatin 10 mg; atorvastatin 20 mg is roughly similar to rosuvastatin 10 mg. Your doctor picks based on how much lowering you need and your other medicines.

Can I take Atorva 10 with Telma or Amlong?

Yes, statins are routinely combined with BP medicines. Amlodipine has a minor interaction with some statins but atorvastatin 10 mg is generally fine; your doctor will confirm.

Does Atorva 10 need a prescription?

Yes. Atorvastatin is a Schedule H medicine in India.
