Uses
- Productive (wet) cough with thick, sticky phlegm that is hard to bring up.
- Chest congestion with wheezing or tightness in bronchitis, asthma or COPD.
- Cough and congestion during chest infections, when a doctor prescribes it alongside other treatment.
How to take it
Take the dose your doctor prescribes, usually two or three times a day, measured with the cup or spoon supplied – not a kitchen spoon. Shake the bottle well before each dose. It can be taken with or without food; drink plenty of water, which helps loosen phlegm. Do not take other cough-and-cold syrups at the same time unless your doctor says so, because many contain the same ingredients. See a doctor if the cough lasts more than 7 days, if you have high fever, blood in the phlegm, breathlessness, or if a child is not improving.
Side effects
Common
- Shakiness or tremor of the hands (from levosalbutamol).
- Fast or pounding heartbeat, nervousness.
- Headache.
- Nausea, vomiting or stomach upset.
- Diarrhoea.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Chest pain or an irregular heartbeat – stop and see a doctor.
- Wheezing that gets worse after a dose.
- Severe allergic reaction – swelling of the lips, face or throat, difficulty breathing, blistering rash.
Safety information
Alcohol
Avoid alcohol; it worsens drowsiness and dehydration and does not help a chest infection.
Pregnancy
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use only if your doctor decides the benefit outweighs the risk.
Kidney problems
Tell your doctor about kidney disease before using it; a lower dose may be needed.
Liver problems
Tell your doctor about liver disease; the dose may need adjusting.
Children
Children's doses are much smaller and depend on age and weight; use only as prescribed. Cough syrups with these ingredients are not for children under 4 unless a doctor advises.
Missed dose
Take it when you remember unless the next dose is nearly due – then skip the missed one. Do not double the dose.
Interactions
- Beta-blockers such as propranolol, atenolol or metoprolol – can block the airway-opening effect of levosalbutamol; tell your doctor.
- Other cough and cold syrups (Ascoril D, Benadryl, Chericof and similar) – risk of double dosing the same ingredients.
- Antidepressants, especially tricyclics (amitriptyline, imipramine) and MAO inhibitors – can increase the effect on the heart.
- Diuretics and steroids – can lower potassium along with levosalbutamol.
- Cough suppressants (dextromethorphan, codeine) – work against an expectorant; do not combine without advice.
Frequently asked questions
What is Ascoril LS syrup used for?
It is used for a wet cough with thick phlegm and chest congestion, especially when there is wheezing. Levosalbutamol opens the airways, ambroxol thins the mucus and guaifenesin helps you cough it out.
Ascoril LS vs Ascoril D – which one should I take?
Ascoril LS is for a productive cough with phlegm and wheeze. Ascoril D contains a cough suppressant for a dry, irritating cough. Taking the wrong one can make things worse, so follow your doctor's advice.
Can Ascoril LS be given to children?
Only on a doctor's prescription and in the dose written for the child's age and weight. Cough products with these ingredients are not for children under 4 without medical advice.
Does Ascoril LS cause drowsiness?
It is not strongly sedating, but it can cause shakiness, a fast heartbeat or nervousness because of levosalbutamol. Avoid driving if you feel unsteady.
Can I take Asthakind-LS with alcohol?
It is best to avoid alcohol while you have a chest infection or cough; it does not interact strongly, but it dehydrates you and can worsen side effects.
Is Ascoril LS safe in pregnancy?
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is used only when the doctor decides the benefit outweighs the risk.
How many days should I take Ascoril LS?
Usually for a few days until the phlegm clears. If the cough lasts more than a week, or you have fever, breathlessness or blood in the sputum, see a doctor instead of continuing the syrup.
Does Ascoril LS need a prescription in India?
Yes. It contains levosalbutamol, which is a Schedule H medicine, so it should be dispensed only against a prescription.
