Uses
- Fever (high temperature) in babies and young children, including fever after vaccination.
- Pain from colds, flu, sore throat, earache and teething.
- Mild to moderate pain after minor injuries or dental problems in children.
- Fever during viral infections and dengue, when the doctor advises paracetamol.
How to take it
Shake the bottle well and measure every dose with the syringe or cup supplied, not a household spoon. This 125 mg per 5 ml strength is the paediatric strength for babies and children up to about 5 to 6 years; give the amount your doctor or the pack chart gives for your child's weight or age, with or without food. Leave at least 4 hours between doses and never give more than 4 doses in 24 hours. Do not give to babies under 2 to 3 months unless a doctor has prescribed it. See a doctor if the fever lasts more than 3 days, the child is unusually drowsy, has a rash or is not taking fluids.
Side effects
Common
- Most children have no side effects at the correct dose.
- Mild stomach upset or nausea.
- Rarely, a mild rash.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Allergic reaction – swelling of the face or tongue, itchy raised rash, wheezing. Go to the emergency room.
- Liver damage from overdose – vomiting, yellow skin or eyes, stomach pain, even a day later. Call a doctor at once.
- Easy bruising, nosebleeds or frequent infections (very rare blood-cell problems).
Safety information
Alcohol
Not relevant for children. Adults who use the syrup should not drink heavily because alcohol and paracetamol together stress the liver.
Pregnancy
Paracetamol is the painkiller usually preferred in pregnancy and breastfeeding, at the lowest effective dose.
Kidney problems
Tell the doctor if your child has a kidney problem; dose or dosing interval may need adjusting.
Liver problems
Avoid in liver disease unless the doctor allows it. Overdose damages the liver – always measure carefully.
Children
Suitable for most babies over 2 to 3 months and young children when dosed by weight. Babies under 3 months need a doctor's advice first. Older children above 6 usually move to the 250 mg/5 ml strength.
Missed dose
Just give the next dose when it is due, at least 4 hours after the last one. Never double the dose.
Interactions
- Other medicines containing paracetamol – cold and flu syrups, combination fever drops. Giving two together causes overdose.
- Ibuprofen syrup – do not give both at the same time unless a doctor has told you to alternate them.
- Metoclopramide or domperidone – may change how quickly paracetamol is absorbed.
- Flucloxacillin – rare risk of blood acidity when combined; tell the doctor.
Frequently asked questions
How much Dolomol 125 should I give my 1-year-old?
The dose depends on your child's weight, not just age. Use the dosing chart on the pack or the dose your paediatrician gave, measure with the syringe provided, and leave at least 4 hours between doses with a maximum of 4 doses a day.
Paracetamol 125 vs 250 syrup – what is the difference?
Both contain paracetamol; the 125 mg/5 ml strength has half the medicine per spoon and is meant for babies and young children. The 250 mg/5 ml (DS) strength is for children aged 6 and above. Giving the DS strength at the 125 dose volume doubles the dose, so always check which bottle you have.
Can I give T-98 Paediatric Suspension to a newborn?
Not without a doctor's advice. Babies under 2 to 3 months should only receive paracetamol if a doctor has prescribed it with the exact dose for the baby's weight.
How often can I give paracetamol syrup to my baby?
Up to 4 times in 24 hours, with at least 4 hours between doses. If the fever returns sooner, use tepid sponging and fluids and call your doctor rather than giving an extra dose.
Can I give paracetamol syrup after vaccination?
Yes, paracetamol is commonly given for fever or soreness after vaccines. Give the usual weight-based dose and do not exceed 4 doses a day.
Does paracetamol syrup cause sleepiness in babies?
No, paracetamol itself does not cause drowsiness. If your baby is unusually sleepy or hard to wake during a fever, see a doctor – that is a sign of the illness, not the medicine.
Is Paracip Syrup available without prescription?
Yes. Paracetamol syrup is an over-the-counter medicine in India. Even so, follow the pack dose exactly and see a doctor if the fever lasts beyond 3 days.
What if I accidentally gave two doses of Febrex 125?
A single extra dose is unlikely to cause harm, but do not give any more paracetamol for the next 8 hours and call your doctor or a poison helpline for advice, especially if the child is small or the dose was large.
