Uses
- Symptoms of an enlarged prostate (BPH) in men – weak stream, difficulty starting, getting up at night to pass urine.
- Helping small kidney or ureter stones pass more easily, for a short course.
- Used along with dutasteride or finasteride when the prostate is large.
How to take it
Take one 0.4 mg capsule or tablet once a day at about the same time, preferably in the morning after breakfast or your first meal, with a glass of water while sitting or standing. Swallow it whole – do not break, chew or crush, because it is a slow-release form. The first doses can cause dizziness on standing, so get up slowly. For an enlarged prostate it is usually continued long term with check-ups every few months; for kidney stones your doctor will tell you when to stop, usually once the stone has passed. Do not stop on your own, as symptoms return. See a doctor if you cannot pass urine at all, have fever with urinary symptoms, or faint.

Interactions
- Other alpha blockers (prazosin, alfuzosin, doxazosin, terazosin) – do not combine; too much drop in blood pressure.

Frequently asked questions
What is Veltam 0.4 used for?
Veltam 0.4 contains tamsulosin 0.4 mg, an alpha blocker. It relaxes the muscles of the prostate and bladder neck so urine flows more easily in men with an enlarged prostate, and it helps small kidney stones pass.
Should I take Veltam 0.4 in the morning or at night?
NHS advises taking it after breakfast or the first meal of the day, at the same time daily. Some Indian doctors prescribe it at bedtime to reduce daytime dizziness; follow your own doctor's instruction and get up slowly.
Veltam vs Veltam Plus vs Veltam F – what is the difference?
Veltam has only tamsulosin. Veltam Plus adds dutasteride and Veltam F adds finasteride, which shrink the prostate over months. Your urologist chooses based on prostate size and symptoms.
How long does tamsulosin take to work?
Urine flow often improves within a few days to 2 weeks. It does not shrink the prostate; it only relaxes the muscle, so symptoms return if you stop.
Can I take Contiflo with Viagra or tadalafil?
Only with your doctor's approval. Both lower blood pressure and the combination can cause dizziness or fainting, especially when starting.
Does Veltam 0.4 affect sex?
It can cause less or no semen on ejaculation (retrograde ejaculation). This is harmless and reverses if the medicine is stopped, but tell your doctor if it bothers you.
Can tamsulosin be given for kidney stones?
Yes, a short course of tamsulosin is commonly prescribed to help stones under about 10 mm pass through the ureter. Your doctor will stop it once the stone has passed.
Is Veltam 0.4 safe with high blood pressure tablets?
It can be, but the combination increases dizziness and falls. Tell your doctor about amlodipine, telmisartan or any other BP medicine so the doses can be adjusted.
Is tamsulosin available without prescription?
No. It is a Schedule H medicine and an enlarged prostate should be properly examined by a doctor before treatment, to rule out other causes.
