Uses

  • High cholesterol – lowers LDL ("bad") cholesterol and triglycerides.
  • Preventing heart attack, stroke and angina in people with heart disease or at high risk; the 40 mg dose is common after a heart attack or stent.
  • People with diabetes or kidney disease who need cholesterol lowering.
  • Inherited high cholesterol (familial hypercholesterolaemia).

How to take it

Take one 40 mg tablet once a day at the same time each day, with or without food. Many people take it in the evening, but any fixed time is fine. Swallow it whole with water. Your doctor may start you on a lower dose and increase it after about 4 weeks based on your cholesterol test. Atorvastatin is usually a long-term, often lifelong, medicine – do not stop it because you feel well, as cholesterol rises again. Avoid large amounts of grapefruit juice. See your doctor if you get unexplained muscle pain, weakness or dark urine.

Safety information

Alcohol

Limit alcohol. Regular heavy drinking raises the risk of liver problems with statins.

Pregnancy

Do not take atorvastatin in pregnancy – it can affect the baby's development. Stop about 3 months before trying to conceive. Ask your doctor about breastfeeding.

Kidney problems

Tell your doctor about kidney disease; atorvastatin may still be used but muscle side effects need watching.

Liver problems

Not suitable if you have active liver disease. Your doctor may check liver tests before and during treatment.

Children

Sometimes prescribed for children aged 10 and above with inherited high cholesterol, under specialist care.

Missed dose

Skip the missed dose and take the next one at the usual time. Do not take two doses together.

Interactions

  • Other cholesterol medicines such as fenofibrate – higher risk of muscle damage.
  • Antifungals (itraconazole, fluconazole, ketoconazole) and antibiotics like clarithromycin, erythromycin and fusidic acid – raise atorvastatin levels; your doctor may pause the statin.
  • Heart medicines diltiazem and verapamil, and ciclosporin – increase statin levels.
  • Warfarin – bleeding risk may change; INR needs checking.
  • HIV and hepatitis C medicines, and St John's wort – tell your doctor.
  • Grapefruit juice in large amounts – avoid.

Frequently asked questions

Atorva 40 morning or night?

Either, as long as it is the same time every day. Many doctors suggest evening because the body makes more cholesterol at night, but a fixed morning dose works too.

Atorva 10 vs Atorva 40 – what is the difference?

Both contain atorvastatin; 40 mg is a higher-intensity dose used after a heart attack, stent or in people at high risk. Your doctor chooses the strength based on your cholesterol and heart risk.

Can I take Atorva 40 with alcohol?

Occasional small amounts are usually fine, but regular heavy drinking raises the risk of liver problems with statins. Keep alcohol to a minimum.

Does Atorva 40 cause muscle pain?

Mild muscle aches are a common side effect. Severe pain, weakness or dark urine can signal muscle damage – stop the tablet and see your doctor the same day.

Can I stop Atorva 40 once my cholesterol is normal?

No. Cholesterol is normal because the medicine is working, and it will rise again if you stop. Statins are usually taken long term.

Is Lipvas 40 safe in pregnancy?

No. Atorvastatin is not recommended in pregnancy and should be stopped about 3 months before trying to conceive. Tell your doctor if you are planning a pregnancy.

Can I take Atorva 40 with antibiotics like Azithral or Clarithromycin?

Clarithromycin and erythromycin raise atorvastatin levels and increase muscle risk; your doctor may pause the statin during the course. Always tell the prescribing doctor you are on a statin.

Is Atorva 40 available without prescription?

No. Atorvastatin is a Schedule H medicine in India and needs a doctor's prescription.

Does Atorva 40 affect the liver?

Rarely it can cause liver inflammation. Your doctor may check liver tests before starting and if you get symptoms such as yellow eyes, dark urine or unusual tiredness.
