Uses

  • Scabies, including crusted scabies and outbreaks in families or hostels.
  • Strongyloides (threadworm) infection of the intestine.
  • Head lice that have not cleared with lotions.
  • River blindness (onchocerciasis) and some other roundworm infections, as prescribed.

How to take it

Take the tablet as a single dose on an empty stomach with a full glass of water, at least 1 hour before food, at the dose your doctor calculates from your body weight (12 mg suits most adults). For scabies a second dose is often repeated after 1 to 2 weeks and everyone in the household is treated at the same time; wash bedding and clothes in hot water. For strongyloides your doctor may ask for repeat stool tests. Do not take veterinary ivermectin. See a doctor if you develop a rash, swelling, confusion or vision problems after the dose.

Side effects

Common

  • Dizziness, tiredness, loss of appetite.
  • Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain.
  • Mild itching or rash, which can briefly worsen in scabies as the mites die.
  • Headache.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Blistering or peeling skin, hives or severe itching – see a doctor.
  • Confusion, sleepiness, unsteadiness or coma (rare, mostly with very high doses or certain other infections).
  • Swelling of the face, eyes or limbs, fever and painful glands (seen when treating river blindness).
  • Eye pain, redness or vision changes.

Safety information

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol on the day of the dose; it can add to dizziness and drowsiness.

Pregnancy

Not usually given in pregnancy unless the doctor feels it is essential; tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Kidney problems

No specific dose change is listed, but tell your doctor about kidney disease.

Liver problems

Tell your doctor about liver disease; use with caution.

Children

Used in children only above about 15 kg body weight, at a weight-based dose set by a doctor.

Missed dose

Ivermectin is usually a single dose. If you forget it, take it as soon as you remember and tell your doctor if you are on a repeat schedule.

Interactions

  • Warfarin – bleeding risk may rise; INR may need checking.
  • Sleeping pills and anxiety medicines (alprazolam, clonazepam) – extra drowsiness.
  • Other anti-parasite medicines (albendazole, diethylcarbamazine) – sometimes combined by doctors but can increase reactions.
  • Medicines affecting the immune system or HIV – tell your doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Ivecop 12 before or after food?

Take it on an empty stomach with water, at least an hour before food, so it is absorbed properly.

How many Ivecop 12 tablets for scabies?

Your doctor works out the dose from your body weight; one 12 mg tablet suits most adults, repeated after 1 to 2 weeks. Treat all household contacts on the same day and wash bedding in hot water.

Ivermectol 12 vs permethrin cream for scabies – which is better?

Permethrin 5% cream is the usual first treatment. Ivermectin tablets are preferred for crusted scabies, outbreaks in institutions, or when cream has failed or cannot be applied properly. Doctors sometimes use both.

Why is my itching worse after taking Ivecop 12?

Itching can increase briefly as the mites die and the body reacts to them. It usually settles over 2 to 4 weeks; an antihistamine or soothing lotion can help. See a doctor if new burrows appear.

Can I take Ivecop 12 with alcohol?

Avoid alcohol on the day you take it; both can cause dizziness and drowsiness.

Is ivermectin safe in pregnancy?

It is usually avoided in pregnancy unless a doctor decides it is essential. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before taking it.

Can I give Vermact 12 to my child?

Only on a doctor's advice. It is generally used in children above 15 kg at a dose based on weight; the DT tablet can be dispersed in water.

Does ivermectin treat worms like albendazole does?

Ivermectin treats strongyloides and some other roundworms, but albendazole is the usual deworming tablet for common worms. Your doctor may combine them in some infections.

Is Ivecop 12 available without prescription?

No. Ivermectin is a Schedule H medicine in India and should be taken only on a doctor's prescription at the correct weight-based dose.
