Uses
- Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) – replaces the thyroid hormone your body is not making enough of.
- Relieves the tiredness, weight gain, hair fall, dry skin and low mood caused by low thyroid.
- After thyroid surgery or radio-iodine treatment, when the gland can no longer make hormone.
- Hypothyroidism in pregnancy, where the dose often needs to go up.
How to take it
Take one 125 mcg tablet once a day on an empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast, tea or coffee, and before any other medicine. Swallow it whole with plain water at the same time every day. Levothyroxine is usually a lifelong medicine; your doctor will check a TSH blood test every few months at first and adjust the dose, so never change the strength on your own. If your tablets are being switched between brands, tell your doctor because a repeat TSH may be needed.

Safety information
Alcohol
Alcohol does not interact directly with levothyroxine, but it can worsen tiredness and mood symptoms of low thyroid. Keep it moderate.
Pregnancy
Safe and necessary in pregnancy – low thyroid harms the baby's development. Tell your doctor as soon as you are pregnant; the dose usually needs to be increased and TSH checked more often. It is fine while breastfeeding.
Kidney problems
No dose change is needed for kidney disease, but tell your doctor about all your conditions.
Liver problems
No dose change is usually needed, but liver disease can change how the hormone is handled; tell your doctor.
Children
Used in children, including newborns with congenital hypothyroidism, under a paediatrician's supervision with weight-based doses.
Missed dose
Take it as soon as you remember that day. If you remember only the next day, skip the missed dose and carry on. Do not take two tablets together.
Interactions
- Calcium, iron tablets and antacids – keep a gap of at least 4 hours or the hormone will not be absorbed.
- Pantoprazole, omeprazole and other acidity medicines – can reduce absorption; tell your doctor.
- Carbamazepine, phenytoin and other epilepsy medicines – may lower levothyroxine levels.
- Warfarin – its effect may increase; INR needs checking.
- Propranolol, digoxin and some diabetes medicines – doses may need adjusting.
- Biotin supplements (hair vitamins) – can give false thyroid test results; stop them 2 days before a TSH test.
Frequently asked questions
Thyronorm 125 should be taken before or after food?
Before food, on an empty stomach, at least 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast or tea. Food, milk and coffee reduce how much hormone is absorbed.
Can I take Thyronorm 125 at night instead of morning?
Yes, if you take it at bedtime at least 3 hours after your last meal and keep to the same timing every day. Morning is more common because it is easier to keep the empty-stomach gap.
Thyronorm vs Eltroxin – which is better?
Both contain levothyroxine and work the same way. Small differences in absorption between brands can shift your TSH, so stick to one brand and tell your doctor if the chemist gives you a different one.
Is Thyronorm 125 safe in pregnancy?
Yes, and it is essential. Untreated low thyroid in pregnancy can affect the baby's brain development. Your doctor will usually increase the dose and check TSH every few weeks.
Can I take Thyronorm 125 with calcium or iron tablets?
Not at the same time. Take levothyroxine first thing in the morning and keep calcium, iron or multivitamins at least 4 hours later.
Why is my hair falling after starting Thyronorm?
Some temporary hair shedding is common in the first months as the thyroid level settles and usually recovers. Hair fall that continues after 6 months may mean the dose needs a review.
What happens if I stop Thyronorm 125 suddenly?
Symptoms of low thyroid – tiredness, weight gain, constipation, slow pulse – return within weeks. Levothyroxine is normally taken for life; never stop without your doctor.
Can I take Thyronorm 125 with alcohol?
There is no direct interaction. Keep alcohol moderate because it can worsen tiredness and mood.
How do I know if my Thyronorm dose is too high?
Palpitations, sweating, anxiety, trouble sleeping, weight loss and shaky hands point to too much hormone. Do not reduce the dose yourself; get a TSH test and see your doctor.
