Uses

  • Abnormal or heavy uterine bleeding caused by hormone imbalance.
  • Absent periods (secondary amenorrhoea) – to bring on a withdrawal bleed.
  • Protecting the uterine lining in women taking oestrogen for menopause symptoms.
  • Endometriosis and some hormone-related gynaecological conditions, under a specialist.

How to take it

Take one 10 mg tablet a day at the same time each day, on the days of your cycle your doctor has marked – often for 5 to 10 days a month. Swallow with water, with or without food. A period-like bleed usually starts a few days after the last tablet. Do not use it to test for pregnancy or to prevent miscarriage; it is not a contraceptive in this form. Keep to the calendar your gynaecologist gave you and tell her if bleeding is unusually heavy or does not come.

Side effects

Safety information

Alcohol

No direct interaction, but alcohol can worsen mood changes and bloating. Keep it moderate.

Pregnancy

Do not take if you are pregnant or think you may be – it is not used to support pregnancy. Small amounts pass into breast milk; ask your doctor if breastfeeding.

Kidney problems

Tell your doctor about kidney disease; fluid retention may be a problem.

Liver problems

Avoid in active liver disease or jaundice; progestins are processed by the liver.

Children

Not for use before puberty; in teenagers only under a gynaecologist.

Missed dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for the next tablet, skip the missed one. Do not take two together.

Interactions

  • Rifampicin (TB), carbamazepine, phenytoin and St John's wort – can lower the hormone level and reduce its effect.
  • Some antifungals and HIV medicines – can raise its level.
  • Diabetes medicines – blood sugar can shift slightly; check more often.
  • Blood thinners (warfarin) – clotting may change; INR should be checked.

Frequently asked questions

When will my period come after Deviry 10?

A withdrawal bleed usually starts 2 to 7 days after the last tablet. If no bleeding comes within about 2 weeks, do a pregnancy test and tell your doctor.

Can Meprate 10 stop a heavy period that has already started?

Doctors sometimes prescribe it to control ongoing heavy bleeding, but the schedule is different from the one used to bring on a period. Follow your gynaecologist's instructions exactly and seek help if bleeding is very heavy.

Is Deviry 10 a contraceptive?

No. The 10 mg tablet does not reliably prevent pregnancy. Use condoms or another method if you need contraception.

Can I take Meprate 10 if I might be pregnant?

No. Do a pregnancy test first. Medroxyprogesterone should not be used to confirm pregnancy or to prevent miscarriage.

Does Deviry 10 cause weight gain?

Some women notice bloating, fluid retention or a small weight change during the course. It usually settles after the tablets stop.

Can I take Deviry 10 with alcohol?

There is no specific interaction, but alcohol can worsen mood swings, headache and bloating during the course, so keep it moderate.

Deviry 10 vs Meprate 10 – are they the same?

Yes, both contain medroxyprogesterone acetate 10 mg and work identically. They differ only in manufacturer and price.

Does medroxyprogesterone need a prescription?

Yes. It is a Schedule H hormone tablet in India and should only be taken on a gynaecologist's advice, because the schedule depends on why it is being used.
