Uses

  • Nausea and vomiting, including after surgery or during migraine attacks.
  • Nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
  • Slow stomach emptying (gastroparesis) causing bloating and fullness, as prescribed by a doctor.

How to take it

Take one 10 mg tablet up to three times a day, usually about 30 minutes before meals, leaving at least 6 hours between doses even if you vomit after taking it. It is meant for short courses – usually no more than 5 days – because the risk of movement-related side effects rises with longer use. Swallow with water. See a doctor straight away if you develop uncontrollable movements of the face, tongue or limbs, muscle stiffness or a very high temperature.

Side effects

Common

  • Drowsiness, tiredness or weakness.
  • Diarrhoea.
  • Low mood.
  • Restlessness.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Movement disorders – tremor, muscle stiffness, spasms of the face, neck or eyes, especially in young people; seek help at once.
  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome – very high fever, sweating, stiff muscles, confusion. Emergency.
  • Slow heartbeat, dizziness or fainting.
  • Hallucinations or severe allergic reaction.

Safety information

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol. It adds to drowsiness and increases the chance of side effects.

Pregnancy

Can be used in pregnancy if the doctor feels it is needed. Not usually recommended while breastfeeding.

Kidney problems

Tell your doctor about kidney disease; the dose is usually reduced.

Liver problems

Tell your doctor about severe liver disease; a lower dose may be needed.

Children

Not for children under 1 year. In children and teenagers it is used only when a doctor decides it is essential, because movement side effects are more common.

Missed dose

Take it when you remember unless the next dose is nearly due – then skip it. Never take two doses within 6 hours.

Interactions

  • Antipsychotic medicines and some anti-vertigo tablets – higher risk of movement disorders.
  • Parkinson's disease medicines (levodopa) – metoclopramide works against them; avoid.
  • SSRI antidepressants (sertraline, fluoxetine) – risk of serotonin syndrome.
  • Sleeping pills, strong painkillers (tramadol) and anxiety medicines – more drowsiness.
  • Paracetamol and some other tablets – metoclopramide speeds up their absorption; usually not a problem but tell your doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Perinorm before or after food?

Take it about 30 minutes before meals so it is working when you eat. Keep at least 6 hours between doses.

Perinorm vs Domstal (domperidone) – which is better for vomiting?

Both treat nausea and vomiting. Domperidone does not enter the brain as much, so it causes fewer movement side effects and drowsiness; metoclopramide (Perinorm) is often preferred for migraine-related vomiting and when stronger effect is needed. Your doctor chooses based on the cause.

Can I take Perinorm daily for a long time?

No. Metoclopramide is meant for short courses of up to about 5 days. Longer use raises the risk of tardive dyskinesia – uncontrollable movements that can become permanent.

Does Perinorm cause sleepiness?

Yes, drowsiness is common. Do not drive, ride a bike or use machinery until you know how it affects you, and avoid alcohol.

Is Perinorm safe in pregnancy?

It can be used in pregnancy for vomiting if your doctor feels it is needed. It is not usually recommended while breastfeeding.

Can I give Perinorm to my child?

Only if a doctor prescribes it. It is not used under 1 year, and in children and teenagers it is reserved for specific situations because movement-related side effects are more likely.

Can I take Perinorm with Dolo 650 for migraine?

Yes. Doctors often combine metoclopramide with paracetamol for migraine – it eases the nausea and helps the painkiller be absorbed faster.

Is Reglan available without prescription?

No. Metoclopramide is a Schedule H medicine in India and should be sold only against a prescription.
