Uses

  • Folate and vitamin B12 support when a doctor finds low levels.
  • Before and during pregnancy when your doctor chooses this form of folate.
  • Folate and B12 support in people with raised needs, as prescribed.

How to take it

Take one capsule or tablet a day after a meal, or as your doctor prescribes. Each dose has 1 mg of folate – the NHS considers 1 mg a day or less of folic acid from supplements unlikely to cause harm, and higher doses can hide the signs of vitamin B12 deficiency (this product also contains B12, but your doctor may still check your level). Do not combine it with other folic acid, B12 or B-complex products unless your doctor approves. If you are planning a pregnancy, your doctor will tell you whether this product replaces the usual 400 microgram folic acid tablet.

Side effects

Common

  • Bloating or wind.
  • Feeling sick or loss of appetite.
  • Mild stomach upset or headache.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Allergic reaction – rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing.
  • Numbness or tingling that keeps getting worse – needs a doctor's review.
  • Severe tiredness or breathlessness – may mean anaemia that needs tests.

Interactions

  • Epilepsy medicines (phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone) – may not mix well with folate; tell your doctor.
  • Methotrexate, sulfasalazine and co-trimoxazole – folate can interact; your doctor decides timing.
  • Other folic acid, B12 or B-complex products – check the total.
