Uses

  • Low intake of B vitamins from a poor, restricted or irregular diet.
  • Recovery after illness when appetite and food intake have been low.
  • Mouth ulcers, a sore red tongue, tiredness or pins and needles when a doctor links them to low B vitamins.
  • Supporting people whose B-vitamin needs or losses are higher, such as heavy drinkers, as advised by a doctor.

How to take it

Take one tablet or capsule a day after a meal with water, or as your doctor advises. Swallow it whole. B vitamins dissolve in water and the body does not store most of them, so leftover amounts pass out in urine – taking more than the label dose does not give extra benefit. Do not combine several B-complex or multivitamin products without checking the total, because the NHS advises keeping vitamin B6 from supplements to 10 mg a day and folic acid to 1 mg a day unless a doctor advises more. If tingling, numbness, mouth ulcers or tiredness last more than a few weeks, see a doctor – a blood test may be needed to check for vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, which needs proper treatment.

Side effects

Common

  • Bright yellow urine from riboflavin (vitamin B2) – harmless.
  • Mild nausea or stomach upset.
  • Unpleasant taste or smell of the tablet.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Numbness or loss of feeling in the hands and feet from taking 200 mg or more of vitamin B6 a day for a long time.
  • Allergic reaction – rash, itching, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing.
  • Symptoms that keep getting worse (tingling, weakness, memory problems) – these may mean B12 deficiency that needs testing, not more supplements.

Safety information

Alcohol

Heavy drinking lowers B vitamins, especially thiamin; a supplement does not undo alcohol damage, so cut down.

Pregnancy

Generally used in pregnancy only as advised by your doctor. Pregnant women need folic acid; ask whether your B-complex adds to the folic acid you already take.

Kidney problems

Usually safe at label doses; tell your doctor if you have kidney disease before taking any supplement.

Liver problems

Usually safe at label doses; tell your doctor if you have liver disease.

Children

Adult tablets are not for young children. Use a paediatric syrup or drops in the labelled dose, as your doctor advises.

Missed dose

Take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take two to make up.

Interactions

  • Epilepsy medicines (phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone) – may not mix well with the folic acid in some B-complex brands, and can lower folate or B12 over time; tell your doctor.
  • Stomach acid medicines (PPIs such as pantoprazole, omeprazole) – long-term use can reduce vitamin B12 absorption; ask your doctor about testing.
  • Other multivitamins, B12 or folic acid products – check the combined dose of vitamin B6 and folic acid.
  • Methotrexate – folic acid can affect how it works; take folic acid only as your doctor schedules it.

Frequently asked questions

Becosules capsule uses

Becosules contains B-complex vitamins with vitamin C, folic acid and biotin. It is used to make up for low B-vitamin intake, for example during recovery from illness or with a poor diet. It does not replace a balanced diet or treatment for a diagnosed deficiency.

Does Becosules help mouth ulcers?

Mouth ulcers and a sore red tongue can be signs of vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, and a B-complex may help if that is the cause. Most mouth ulcers have other causes – see a doctor or dentist if an ulcer lasts more than 3 weeks.

Neurobion Forte tablet uses

Neurobion Forte contains vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, nicotinamide and calcium pantothenate. It is used for low B-vitamin intake and as advised by doctors when tingling or numbness is linked to low B vitamins.

Can I take Becosules daily?

One a day at the label dose is usual for a limited period. Taking more does not help, because extra B vitamins pass out in urine, and long-term high doses of vitamin B6 can cause nerve damage.

Becosules vs Neurobion Forte – what is the difference?

Both are B-complex products. Becosules also contains vitamin C, folic acid and biotin; Neurobion Forte has B1, B2, B6, B12, nicotinamide and pantothenate without vitamin C. Your doctor can tell you which suits your need.

Why does my urine turn yellow after B-complex?

Riboflavin (vitamin B2) that the body does not use leaves through the urine and can colour it bright yellow. This is harmless.

Is B-complex good for hair fall?

Hair loss is a sign of biotin deficiency, which is rare. There is no good evidence that B-complex grows hair in people who are not deficient. See a doctor if hair fall is heavy or sudden.

Can I take B-complex in pregnancy?

Only as your doctor advises. You will usually already be on folic acid, so check the combined dose.

B-complex before or after food?

After a meal is usually better, as it reduces stomach upset.
