Uses
- Vitamin E deficiency diagnosed by your doctor, for example in conditions that reduce fat absorption.
- Topping up vitamin E when your diet is low in vegetable oils, nuts, seeds and green leafy vegetables.
- As one part of a treatment plan your doctor has suggested – vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps protect body tissues.
How to take it
Swallow one capsule whole with water, with a meal – vitamin E is fat-soluble and is absorbed better with food that contains some fat. Take it once a day only if a doctor or pharmacist has advised it; most people get enough vitamin E from food. The NHS advises that 540 mg (800 IU) or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm, so do not take more than one capsule a day or combine it with other products that contain vitamin E (many multivitamins do). Do not break the capsule open to swallow the oil. If you are taking it for a skin or hair complaint, see a doctor if there is no improvement rather than increasing the dose.
Side effects
Common
- Usually none at this dose.
- Nausea or stomach upset.
- Diarrhoea or stomach cramps.
- Tiredness or headache.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Unusual bleeding or bruising – high-dose vitamin E may increase the risk of bleeding, including bleeding in the brain.
- Sudden severe headache, weakness on one side or confused speech – get emergency help.
- Allergic reaction – rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing.
Safety information
Alcohol
No known direct interaction. Heavy drinking harms the liver, where vitamin E is stored, so keep alcohol low.
Pregnancy
Do not take high-dose vitamin E capsules in pregnancy unless a doctor advises it; high levels may increase the risk of birth defects and more research is needed. Ask your doctor while breastfeeding.
Kidney problems
No dose change is usually needed, but tell your doctor about kidney disease before starting any supplement.
Liver problems
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, especially if it affects fat absorption or blood clotting.
Children
400 mg capsules are not for children unless a paediatrician prescribes them for a diagnosed deficiency.
Missed dose
Take it with your next meal if you remember the same day; otherwise skip it. Never take two capsules together.
Interactions
- Blood thinners – warfarin, acenocoumarol, aspirin, clopidogrel – vitamin E may add to the bleeding risk; ask your doctor first.
- Other supplements that contain vitamin E, such as multivitamins and Evion LC – check the total daily dose.
- Orlistat, cholestyramine and liquid paraffin – reduce absorption of fat-soluble vitamins; take vitamin E at a different time.
- Cancer treatment (chemotherapy or radiotherapy) – tell your oncologist before taking antioxidant supplements.
Frequently asked questions
Evion 400 capsule uses
Evion 400 contains vitamin E (tocopheryl acetate) 400 mg. It is used to treat or prevent vitamin E deficiency when diet is not enough or a medical condition reduces fat absorption. Most healthy people get enough vitamin E from food.
Is Evion 400 good for hair and face?
Vitamin E helps keep skin and eyes healthy, but there is no reliable evidence that swallowing Evion 400 makes hair grow or clears facial skin in people who are not deficient. See a dermatologist for persistent hair fall or skin problems.
Can I take Evion 400 daily?
Only if a doctor or pharmacist has advised it. The NHS says 540 mg (800 IU) or less a day of vitamin E supplements is unlikely to cause harm, so do not take more than one 400 mg capsule a day, and count vitamin E in any multivitamin you take.
Can I apply Evion 400 capsule oil on my face?
The capsule is made to be swallowed. Some people pierce it to apply the oil, but it can irritate or block pores in some skin types. Use a product made for the skin instead, and stop if you get a rash.
Evion 400 before or after food?
After or with a meal. Vitamin E dissolves in fat and is absorbed better when taken with food.
What are the side effects of vitamin E 400 mg?
Most people have none. Some get nausea, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, tiredness or headache. High doses may increase the risk of bleeding, so tell your doctor if you bruise easily or take a blood thinner.
Is vitamin E 400 safe in pregnancy?
Do not take high-dose vitamin E in pregnancy unless your doctor advises it. High levels may increase the risk of birth defects, and pregnancy vitamins already contain what is needed.
Can I take Evion 400 with blood thinners?
Ask your doctor first. Vitamin E may add to the bleeding effect of warfarin, aspirin and clopidogrel.
Evion 400 vs Evion 600 – which is better?
Both contain vitamin E; 600 mg is a higher dose that goes above the 540 mg a day level the NHS considers unlikely to cause harm. Use a higher strength only if your doctor prescribes it.
