Uses

  • Treating iron deficiency anaemia, as diagnosed by a blood test.
  • Iron and folate support in pregnancy when your doctor also wants you to take zinc.
  • Building up iron after blood loss or heavy periods, as a doctor advises.

How to take it

Take one tablet a day, or as your doctor advises, with water. Iron is absorbed best on an empty stomach, but take it with food if it upsets your stomach. Keep tea, coffee, milk and eggs away from the dose. Swallow it whole. It can take a couple of months for iron levels to recover; your doctor may check your blood after about 4 weeks. This tablet also contains zinc – do not add other zinc supplements, because the NHS advises not taking more than 25 mg of zinc a day from supplements unless a doctor tells you to. Do not take it for more than 6 months without seeing a doctor if you bought it without a prescription. Keep it out of children's reach.

Side effects

Common

  • Constipation or diarrhoea.
  • Stomach pain, heartburn or feeling sick.
  • Dark or black stools – harmless and expected with iron.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Accidental overdose, especially in children – vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness; get emergency help immediately.
  • Black, tarry stools with stomach pain or vomiting blood – may be bleeding, not just iron; see a doctor urgently.
  • Allergic reaction – swollen throat or tongue, itchy raised rash or difficulty breathing.

Safety information

Alcohol

No direct interaction, but heavy drinking can worsen stomach side effects; keep alcohol low.

Pregnancy

Used in pregnancy only as your doctor advises; check with your doctor while breastfeeding.

Kidney problems

Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease before taking iron or zinc.

Liver problems

Tell your doctor if you have liver disease or too much iron in your body.

Children

Not for children. Accidental iron overdose can be fatal in children – keep tablets locked away.

Missed dose

Take it as soon as you remember unless the next dose is nearly due. Do not double up.

Interactions

  • Antibiotics such as doxycycline and ciprofloxacin – iron reduces their absorption; take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or after.
  • Antacids and medicines or supplements containing calcium, magnesium or zinc – take them at a different time from iron.
  • Levothyroxine (thyroid tablets) – take it at least 4 hours apart from iron.
  • Other zinc products and multivitamins – risk of going above safe zinc limits.
  • Tea, coffee, eggs and milk – reduce iron absorption; avoid them around the time of your dose.

Frequently asked questions

Livogen XT tablet uses

Livogen XT contains ferrous ascorbate (100 mg iron), folic acid 1.5 mg and zinc. It is used for iron deficiency anaemia and to support iron and folate levels, for example in pregnancy, as advised by a doctor.

Livogen XT before or after food?

Iron is absorbed best on an empty stomach, but take it with food if it upsets your stomach. Avoid tea, coffee and milk around the dose.

Can I take Livogen XT in pregnancy?

Iron and folic acid are commonly prescribed in pregnancy. Take Livogen XT only if your doctor advises it, and do not add other zinc products.

Livogen XT side effects

Constipation, diarrhoea, stomach pain, heartburn, nausea and black stools are common. Tell your doctor if they are troublesome.

Why does this iron tablet have zinc?

Some iron tablets add zinc for people whose diet is also low in zinc. If you already take a zinc or multivitamin product, tell your doctor, because too much zinc lowers copper.

How long should I take Livogen XT?

Usually for a few months until your iron stores recover, as your doctor advises. Your doctor may recheck your blood after about 4 weeks.

Is black stool normal with Livogen XT?

Dark stools are a common effect of iron. Black, tarry stools with stomach pain or vomiting blood need urgent medical help.

Can I take Livogen XT with calcium?

Take them at different times – calcium and antacids reduce iron absorption.
