Uses

  • Iron deficiency anaemia, as diagnosed by a blood test and prescribed by your doctor.
  • Iron, folate and vitamin B12 support in pregnancy or after blood loss, on medical advice.
  • People who could not tolerate other iron tablets, when a doctor suggests this form.

How to take it

Take one tablet a day, or as your doctor advises, with water. Iron is absorbed best on an empty stomach, but take it with food if it upsets your stomach. Keep tea, coffee, milk and eggs away from the dose. Iron levels take a couple of months to recover; your doctor may recheck your blood after about 4 weeks. The tablet also contains zinc – do not add other zinc products. Keep iron tablets out of children's reach – accidental overdose can be fatal.

Side effects

Common

  • Constipation or diarrhoea.
  • Stomach pain, heartburn or feeling sick.
  • Dark or black stools – harmless and expected with iron.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Accidental overdose, especially in children – vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness; get emergency help immediately.
  • Black, tarry stools with stomach pain or vomiting blood – may be bleeding, not just iron; see a doctor urgently.
  • Allergic reaction – swollen throat or tongue, itchy raised rash or difficulty breathing.

Safety information

Alcohol

No direct interaction, but heavy drinking can worsen stomach side effects; keep alcohol low.

Pregnancy

Used in pregnancy only as your doctor advises; check with your doctor while breastfeeding.

Kidney problems

Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease.

Liver problems

Tell your doctor if you have liver disease or too much iron in your body.

Children

Not for children. Keep iron tablets locked away from them.

Missed dose

Take it as soon as you remember unless the next dose is nearly due; do not double up.

Interactions

  • Antibiotics such as doxycycline and ciprofloxacin – iron reduces their absorption; take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or after.
  • Antacids and medicines or supplements containing calcium, magnesium or zinc – take them at a different time from iron.
  • Levothyroxine (thyroid tablets) – take it at least 4 hours apart from iron.
  • Other zinc, iron or multivitamin products – check the totals.

What is ferrous bisglycinate?

It is a form of iron combined with glycine. Like other iron salts it replaces iron; your doctor may choose it if other forms upset your stomach.

How long should I take iron tablets?

Usually a few months until iron stores recover, as your doctor advises, with a blood test after about 4 weeks.
