Uses

  • Iron deficiency and mild iron deficiency anaemia, as a doctor advises.
  • Iron, folate and vitamin B12 top-up when diet is poor or during recovery.
  • An iron option for people who prefer a liquid to tablets.

How to take it

Shake the bottle and measure the dose shown on the label (the strength is given per 15 ml) with the cup provided, or as your doctor advises. Take it after meals if it upsets your stomach. Mix it with water or juice to help avoid teeth staining, and rinse your mouth afterwards; do not mix it with milk. Keep tea and coffee away from the dose. If tiredness or paleness continues after a few weeks, see a doctor for a blood test, because anaemia has many causes. Do not take iron bought without a prescription for more than 6 months without seeing a doctor. Keep the bottle away from children.

Side effects

Common

  • Constipation or diarrhoea.
  • Stomach pain or feeling sick.
  • Dark stools and temporary teeth staining.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Accidental overdose, especially in children – vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness; get emergency help immediately.
  • Black, tarry stools with stomach pain or vomiting blood – may be bleeding, not just iron; see a doctor urgently.
  • Allergic reaction – swollen throat or tongue, itchy raised rash or difficulty breathing.

Safety information

Alcohol

Dexorange syrup contains a small amount of alcohol; check the label. Avoid extra alcohol while taking iron.

Pregnancy

Use in pregnancy only as your doctor advises; your doctor may prefer a tablet with a set iron and folic acid dose.

Kidney problems

Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease.

Liver problems

Tell your doctor about liver disease or iron overload.

Children

Adult doses are not for children; use only the dose a doctor gives, and keep the bottle out of reach.

Missed dose

Take it when you remember unless the next dose is nearly due; never double the dose.

Interactions

  • Antibiotics such as doxycycline and ciprofloxacin – iron reduces their absorption; take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or after.
  • Antacids and medicines or supplements containing calcium, magnesium or zinc – take them at a different time from iron.
  • Levothyroxine (thyroid tablets) – take it at least 4 hours apart from iron.
  • Tea, coffee, eggs and milk – reduce iron absorption; avoid them around the time of your dose.

Frequently asked questions

Dexorange syrup uses

Dexorange contains ferric ammonium citrate (32.8 mg iron per 15 ml), folic acid and vitamin B12. It is used for iron deficiency and to top up iron, folate and B12, as advised by a doctor.

Dexorange syrup dose

Follow the dose on the label or your doctor's advice; the strength is stated per 15 ml. Children need a doctor-decided dose.

Does Dexorange increase haemoglobin?

If your anaemia is caused by low iron, iron replacement raises haemoglobin over weeks to months. Anaemia has other causes too, so get a blood test if you stay tired or pale.

Dexorange before or after food?

Iron is absorbed best on an empty stomach, but take it after food if it upsets your stomach. Avoid milk, tea and coffee around the dose.

Dexorange syrup side effects

Constipation, diarrhoea, stomach pain, nausea, dark stools and teeth staining are common.

Can I take Dexorange in pregnancy?

Only as your doctor advises. Pregnant women are usually prescribed iron and folic acid tablets in a set dose.

Does Dexorange contain alcohol?

The label lists a small amount of alcohol in each dose. Tell your doctor if you need to avoid alcohol completely.

Can children take Dexorange?

Only in the dose a doctor gives. Keep iron syrups out of children's reach, because iron overdose is dangerous for them.
