Uses

  • Treating iron deficiency anaemia in people who find tablets hard to swallow, as a doctor advises.
  • Iron, folate and vitamin B12 support during pregnancy or recovery, when prescribed.
  • Anaemia in older children when a paediatrician prescribes this liquid and dose.

How to take it

Shake the bottle and measure the dose with the cup or syringe provided, not a kitchen spoon. Take it once a day or as your doctor advises. Iron is absorbed best on an empty stomach, but take it with food if it upsets the stomach. Mixing liquid iron with water or juice and rinsing your mouth afterwards helps avoid teeth staining; do not mix it with milk. Keep tea and coffee away from the dose. Iron levels take a couple of months to recover, and your doctor may check your blood after about 4 weeks. Keep the bottle out of children's reach – for a child, even a little more than the prescribed dose can be dangerous.

Side effects

Common

  • Constipation or diarrhoea.
  • Stomach pain or feeling sick.
  • Dark stools and temporary teeth staining.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Accidental overdose, especially in children – vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness; get emergency help immediately.
  • Black, tarry stools with stomach pain or vomiting blood – may be bleeding, not just iron; see a doctor urgently.
  • Allergic reaction – swollen throat or tongue, itchy raised rash or difficulty breathing.

Safety information

Alcohol

No direct interaction; keep alcohol low.

Pregnancy

Used in pregnancy only as your doctor advises; check with your doctor while breastfeeding.

Kidney problems

Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease.

Liver problems

Tell your doctor about liver disease or iron overload.

Children

Give to children only in the dose a paediatrician prescribes, measured accurately. Iron overdose is a leading cause of poisoning deaths in young children.

Missed dose

Take it when you remember unless the next dose is nearly due; never double the dose.

Interactions

  • Antibiotics such as doxycycline and ciprofloxacin – iron reduces their absorption; take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or after.
  • Antacids and medicines or supplements containing calcium, magnesium or zinc – take them at a different time from iron.
  • Levothyroxine (thyroid tablets) – take it at least 4 hours apart from iron.
  • Tea, coffee, eggs and milk – reduce iron absorption; avoid them around the time of your dose.
