Uses
- Vitamin supplement for babies and young children when a doctor or pharmacist recommends it.
- Children aged 6 months to 5 years who need vitamins A, C and D, as the NHS advises.
- Children with poor or fussy eating, while you work on a varied diet.
How to take it
Give the dose on the label for your child's age, or as your paediatrician advises, using the dropper supplied. Drops can be put directly in the mouth or mixed with a little food. Do not give two vitamin supplements at the same time – for example, do not give cod liver oil together with vitamin drops, because both contain vitamins A and D. Babies having more than 500 ml of infant formula a day usually should not be given vitamin supplements, because formula is already fortified. If the drops contain iron, keep the bottle well out of reach. Check with a pharmacist which product suits your child.
Side effects
Common
- Mild stomach upset or vomiting soon after a dose.
- Loose stools or constipation.
- Dark stools if the product contains iron.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Accidental overdose – drops and syrups with iron or vitamins A and D can be dangerous for small children in large amounts; get medical help.
- Allergic reaction – rash, swelling, difficulty breathing.
- Vomiting, poor feeding or unusual drowsiness after a dose – see a doctor.

Frequently asked questions
Zincovit drops uses for babies
Zincovit drops supply vitamins, zinc and other nutrients for infants and young children. Use them when your doctor or pharmacist recommends a supplement.
Do babies need multivitamin drops?
The NHS recommends vitamins A, C and D daily for children aged 6 months to 5 years, unless they have more than 500 ml of formula a day. Breastfed babies need vitamin D from birth.
Zincovit drops vs A to Z drops
Both are paediatric multivitamin drops but their ingredients differ. Ask your paediatrician which suits your child.
How to give multivitamin drops to a baby?
Use the dropper to measure the dose and give it directly or mixed with a little food the baby will finish.
Can I give vitamin D drops and multivitamin drops together?
Usually not – most multivitamin drops already contain vitamin D. Giving two supplements can mean too much.
Can I give cod liver oil with vitamin drops?
No. Cod liver oil also contains vitamins A and D, so one supplement is enough.
Multivitamin drops side effects
Mild stomach upset or loose stools can happen. Drops with iron can darken stools. See a doctor for vomiting or poor feeding.
Till what age should I give multivitamin drops?
The NHS advice covers 6 months to 5 years. Ask your paediatrician about your child.
