Uses
- Treating vitamin D deficiency confirmed by a blood test, as a weekly or monthly dose.
- Bone pain, muscle weakness and tiredness caused by low vitamin D.
- Maintenance after deficiency is corrected, usually once a month, as your doctor advises.
How to take it
Empty one sachet into a glass of milk or water, stir and drink it at once, with or after a meal. This high dose is taken only at the interval your doctor sets – commonly once a week for several weeks to correct deficiency, then once a month. Never take it daily: 60,000 IU is fifteen times the 4,000 IU daily upper limit for adults, and repeated overuse causes vitamin D toxicity with high calcium. Do not combine it with other vitamin D products unless your doctor has checked the total. See a doctor if you get vomiting, constipation, extreme thirst or confusion.
Side effects
Common
- Usually none at the correct dose.
- Nausea, loss of appetite or constipation.
- Headache or a metallic taste.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- High calcium from too much vitamin D – vomiting, constipation, excessive thirst, passing urine often, confusion, weakness.
- Kidney stones – sharp pain in the side or back.
- Allergic reaction – rash, swelling, difficulty breathing.
Safety information
Alcohol
No direct interaction. Heavy drinking harms bone health, so limit it.
Pregnancy
High-dose vitamin D is used in pregnancy only for confirmed deficiency under a doctor's care; the usual advice is 400 IU a day.
Kidney problems
Not suitable with kidney failure, kidney stones or high calcium without specialist advice.
Liver problems
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease.
Children
Give to children only on a paediatrician's prescription, in the schedule they set.
Missed dose
Take the missed sachet when you remember unless the next is nearly due – then skip it. Never take two together.
Interactions
- Other vitamin D, calcium or calcitriol products and multivitamins – check the total so you do not take too much.
- Thiazide water pills (hydrochlorothiazide, indapamide) – can raise blood calcium together with vitamin D.
- Epilepsy medicines (phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital), steroids such as prednisolone, and cholestyramine or liquid paraffin – can reduce vitamin D's effect or absorption.
- Digoxin – high calcium can cause heart rhythm problems.
