Uses
- Daily vitamin D for breastfed babies and young children, as your paediatrician advises.
- Preventing rickets in infants and children who get little sunlight.
- Treating low vitamin D in children on a doctor's prescription.
How to take it
Give the dose your doctor advises – often 0.5 ml (400 IU) once a day for babies – measured with the dropper supplied. You can put the drops directly in the mouth or mix them with a little milk, food or juice that the child will finish. Breastfed babies and babies having less than 500 ml of formula a day usually need a daily vitamin D supplement; formula is already fortified. Do not give more than advised: the NHS says babies under 12 months should not have more than 1,000 IU a day, and children aged 1 to 10 years not more than 2,000 IU a day. Do not combine with other vitamin D or multivitamin drops unless your doctor has checked the total. See a doctor if your child has vomiting, constipation, poor feeding or unusual thirst.

Frequently asked questions

Usually yes. Breastfed babies, and babies having less than 500 ml of formula a day, are advised a daily vitamin D supplement.

Use the dropper supplied to measure the dose. Put it directly into the baby's mouth or mix it with a little milk or food the baby will finish.
Uprise-D3 drops vs Depura Kids drops
Both contain 400 IU of vitamin D3 in 0.5 ml. Use whichever your doctor recommends and measure carefully.
Can vitamin D drops cause constipation in babies?
Mild constipation can occur. Vomiting, poor feeding, unusual thirst or passing urine often may mean too much vitamin D – see a doctor.
Till what age should vitamin D drops be given?
Babies and children aged 1 to 4 are advised a daily vitamin D supplement. Ask your paediatrician how long your child needs it.
Can I give vitamin D drops with multivitamin drops?
Only if your doctor has checked both labels, because many multivitamin drops also contain vitamin D.
What if I give a double dose of vitamin D drops by mistake?
Do not give another dose that day, and go back to the usual dose next time. Call your doctor if a large amount was swallowed or your child has vomiting, poor feeding or unusual thirst.
